How To Talk To The Men In Your Life

November is used to raise awareness for men’s health and we have some eye-opening facts about the men in our lives.
Men are dying much earlier than women. Prostate and Testicular Cancer is the #2 Cancer that men contract and they are largely preventable and treatable if discovered early. Sadly, these cancers are often discovered too late. One of the main reasons these cancers are not discovered early is because men are reluctant to see a doctor regularly.
Men’s health facts:
  • The 10-year survival rate for Prostrate Cancer, if found early, is 98%.
  • Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men aged 15-39 years of age.
  • Approximately 1.1 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually.
  • 300,000+ men will die of prostate cancer this year.
  • Men die on average 6 years before women.
One of our full-time employees has been an advocate for men’s health education for years, he weighs in on what November means to him:
My dad had a 1970’s moustache he rocked well into the 80’s. I think moustaches look awesome. Through the years I learned more about men’s health and prostate cancer, which runs in my family. “Movember” has become an annual event for me.Every November when my Mustache starts to become noticeable, I will inevitably receive questions and comments. I take these moments to start a conversation and to remind men to schedule their yearly physical. And I remind women, to remind the men in their life, to get checked out too.So, in honor of our fathers, our partners, our brothers and our sons, a simple gesture and an awesome moustache can help the important men in our lives stick around a little longer.-Mark, Director of Content Creation at Wella Store
As professionals behind the chair, it is not always easy or even your job to bring up some of these very important topics to clients and loved ones, but as salon talk goes…. it can simply start as a facial hair conversation which could lead to persuading someone to get a physical for the first time in years!
