Advice for a Better Client Experience

We recently sat down with of the greatest colorists of our time, Sonya Dove, to talk about her advice for colorists. Her response was simple: WORK TIDY! Whether you are in a suite or a multi-chair salon, this lasting impression can speak volumes to a new or long-time client.
We’ve all had those days – whether we’re running behind with a client, or drop something in middle of another client – when it might seem easier to rush, doing your absolutely best to work in a clean and organized manner helps leave an impression on your guests that you can take to the bank. It starts when you do – maintain a clean station during your color application – keep your gloves, brushes, and bowls tidy. Sonya says, “you should be keeping your gloves and apron clean. If you get color or lightener on them, wipe them off immediately. This is part of the experience that clients pay for and makes you look the most professional.”
Outside of your station and hands, keeping the rest of your salon or suite clean and clutter free is also important. If your clients are aware of the high standards you set for cleanliness, it reassures their confidence in you and your establishment.
Here are some additional tips from Salon Today, that will assist you on putting your salon on the clean track:
  • Clean after each customer. This is one of the most important things a salon must do for sanitary reasons. If you cut someone’s hair the worst thing you can do is bring a customer over to your station and have them walk through someone else’s hair. It’s also easy to slip on someone’s hair. Different services and treatments require different sanitary measures. Let your clients know you cleaned the tools being used before the service.
  • When applying makeup and creams, wipe the entire area clean after each client to insure cross contamination. Lotions, make-up, wax pots are susceptible to bacteria.
  • Make sure garbage is empty. Clients do not like looking at other people’s trash. Empty 2 to 3 times in a course of a day.
  • Check the bathrooms every hour. You do not want a dirty bathroom in your beauty salon. Make sure the garbage is empty at all times.
  • All combs, brushes, and clips should be sanitized after each use.
  • Retail shelving and products must be dusted daily. Dust on retail means it isn’t selling, that will result in poor retailing in your salon. Keep this area spotless.
  • Clutter is a big mistake in the salon. Having your work station or stations covered with notes and pictures and social obligations is not the image you want in your salon. Your work space should be clean of clutter. There should be a place for everything and everything in its place.
  • Sanitizer placed in multiple locations for your staff and clients.
Your salon says a lot about who you are and the kind of work you do, so it’s okay to be a little OCD in your own salon or suite. Your clients are more aware than you might think, and appreciate a stylist who is equal parts neat freak and magician.
