How to Remove Demi-Permanent Hair Color

Your client loved their demi-permanent hair color, but now they're ready for a change. And, while these low-commitment shades are designed to fade over time, some clients want a faster refresh. The good news? In most cases, you don't need to strip the color completely. From tonal correction to color reducers, there are several ways to create a clean canvas for their next look.
So, here's your complete guide to removing (or "resetting") demi-permanent shades, so your client's hair is ready for their next shade…

What is Demi-Permanent Hair Color?

Demi-permanent hair color deposits pigment without significantly lightening the hair. Unlike permanent color, it contains no ammonia or uses a low-alkaline formula, helping to enhance, refresh or tone existing color. The result is glossy, natural-looking color that gradually fades over time rather than growing out with a noticeable demarcation line.

Demi-Permanent vs. Permanent vs. Semi-Permanent Hair Color: What's the Difference?

Does Demi-Permanent Hair Color Wash Out Completely?

Demi-permanent hair colors are designed to gradually fade from wash to wash. Case in point: Color Touch fades beautifully over 28 washes, giving your client true-to-tone wear from one salon visit to the next. In most cases, demi-permanent dyes will eventually wash out completely. However, highly porous hair can retain pigment for longer, particularly if it has been previously lightened or chemically treated. As a result, some clients may notice lingering tones that take longer to fade than expected.

Why Does Demi-Permanent Hair Color Sometimes 'Stick'?

Is your client's color visible long after the time it would usually take to fade? Here's why a demi-permanent formula might stick around for longer:
  • High porosity hair – If your client's hair is highly porous (meaning it has gaps along the cuticle), demi-permanent hair dye molecules can settle into the lower layers and become tricky to remove.
  • Pre-lightened base – Lightening hair can contribute to porosity, letting demi-permanent colors penetrate deeper. The lighter base also enables these pigments to appear more visible.
  • Overlapping pigments – We love clients who diligently book their touch-ups to keep their color fresh. However, demi-permanent pigments can sometimes accumulate with repeat applications, causing them to fade more slowly.

How to Remove Demi-Permanent Hair Color

Try Correcting the Color First

It's rare that a demi-permanent color actually needs to be removed. In most cases, you can give your client a fresh shade by building on the color that's already there. So, if they're saying they want their current shade switched, your goal may be less about removal and more about rebalancing. Clients who say they want a color removed usually mean they want to get back to the shade they had before. You can do this by:
  • Neutralizing rather than stripping – Instead of trying to remove all the pigment, cancel out unwanted tones of yellow with violet, orange with blue, and red with green/ash tones in their formula.
  • Layering strategically with demi-permanent color – A fresh application of a demi-permanent hair color can refine or redirect the tone without needing a full correction service.
  • Refreshing with a gloss service – In many cases, a transparent or sheer tonal shift (courtesy of a SHINEFINITY gloss) is enough to visually 'reset' the result.

Trust the Process – and Use Clarifying Shampoo

Demi-permanent hair colors are called 'low-commitment' because they fade over time, so if your client is willing to wait, letting the shade run its course is often the gentlest approach. If they wish, they can speed things along with a clarifying shampoo. These deep cleansers are armed with potent surfactants, which can accelerate the fading process and encourage residual pigment to wash away more quickly.
For clients trusting the process, remind them it can take a few weeks, depending on how fresh their color is. Color Touch, for example, fades beautifully over 28 washes.

So, When Should Demi-Permanent Hair Color Be Removed?

Most demi-permanent colors can be corrected, rebalanced or allowed to gradually fade, and we recommend trying these approaches first to streamline your client's color service. But if the color is stubborn, lingering in patches, or not fading in the expected time period, reach for a hair color remover or reducer. This will 'reset' the base, so hair is ready for a fresh coat of color.
