How to Do a Quick & Easy Balayage Color Correction

By: Zara Kenyon
Image Credit: @paintedbydana One of the (many) reasons balayage remains popular is its low-maintenance appeal. Because the root is kept natural or softly shaded, clients can stretch the time between major touch-ups and still enjoy a seamless, sun-kissed finish. It's a look that grows out beautifully, with no harsh lines or blocky roots. And, sometimes, touching up their hair color can be as simple as booking in a zero-damage SHINEFINITY Glaze.
But low-maintenance doesn’t mean no-maintenance. Even the most flawless balayage can lose its luster over time, and without the right salon care, highlights can turn brassy and dull or become overprocessed. So, how do you carry out a balayage color correction for every type of problem? Here's your failsafe guide to making freehand highlights look flawless once more...

First, Figure Out What Needs Correcting

No two balayage color corrections are the same, and the causes can vary from client to client. Before you mix up their formula, take the time to properly assess what’s actually gone wrong. Is it a tonal issue? A placement problem? A color buildup situation? Here's how to figure out the culprit:
  • If the Color is Warm and Brassy...

... it's likely your client's hair has simply faded over time. Without regular salon visits, toners begin to wear away, revealing overly warm underlying tones. Heat damage, UV exposure, excess washing, and metals in the water can speed up this process, so if your client's balayage is fading brassy fast, they won't just need correction – a hair care overhaul is necessary, too.
  • If Hair Looks Dull, Patchy or Dark...

... your client's hair may be over-toned or overprocessed. This can happen if they repeatedly use box dyes or color-depositing products (like purple shampoos and conditioners) at home. Improper use of these tinted products can cause color to build up and stain, leaving a muddy, dull, uneven look. This is especially true for high porosity hair types, which grab on to color molecules quickly and hold them unevenly.
  • If There is Visible Banding...

... it could be the result of a DIY root touch-up, overlapping lightener, or improper blending of previous highlights. Either way, the hair will show clear lines of demarcation or uneven streaks. This breaks the smooth, natural flow of a balayage, leaving your client with a two-tone look – not the soft, seamless, sun-kissed highlights they were hoping for.

Next, Choose the Right Correction Technique

To Correct a Brassy Faded Balayage...

The solution: Tailored, targeted toning that cools down excess warmth, guided by the color wheel.

  • Counteract yellow tones. For a blonde balayage that's faded yellow, choose a violet-based toner to counteract brassiness and create a softer, more natural-looking finish.
  • Cool down orange tones. For orange balayage or orangey-yellow roots, use a toner with blue or a mix of blue and violet undertones to neutralize warmth and restore balance.
  • Reduce red tones. To tone down red hair color, opt for a toner with ashy green undertones or a mix of ashy blue and green undertones.

To Correct a Dull or Over-Toned Balayage...

The solution: 'Resetting' the hair color to create a more even result, whether that means clarifying with a shampoo or removing pigment with a color remover.

  • Apply a pre-toning treatment. After rinsing out excess pigment but before re-toning balayage with a fresh color application, mist the Color Service Pre-Color Treatment from roots to ends. It's designed to support structure and improve the hair's smoothness, so you get a more even result.

To Correct a Harsh, Banded Balayage...

The solution: Softening harsh lines and blending the transition between root shadow and lightened lengths.

  • Feather and blend the lines. Whether you're fixing a DIY root touch-up or improper highlighting techniques, you may need to go back in with lightener to feather harsh demarcation lines. Focus on the edges of the bands, using a fine brush to create a more seamless blend.
  • Use a bond-strengthening hair lightener. Your choice of lightener matters – especially when you're correcting hair that may feel fragile. So, for this type of balayage color correction, we recommend BlondorPlex for up to 97% less breakage*.
  • Add dimension with lowlights. If your client doesn't want to add any more lightness and hopes to soften their balayage, use lowlights or a feathered root shadow to blend harsh lines and create a reverse balayage. Demi-permanent Color Touch is the ideal product for this, as it comes in an extensive range of intermixable hues, each harnessing Metal Purifier for true-to-tone vibrancy and shine.

Prevent Future Balayage Hair Disasters

You can't stop your client from doing another DIY dye job, but you can send them home with tips to keep their balayage looking glossy for longer. So, before they leave the salon with their freshly corrected hair color, share these tips for easy maintenance. It might just save them from needing future color corrections...

1. Wash with a Color-Safe Shampoo

If there's one thing your client needs to change right now, it's their choice of shampoo. Color-safe formulas are only getting more advanced, and ULTIMATE COLOR Shampoo is testimony to that. It's Wella Professionals' latest innovation for cleansing and protecting in one, with a metal-purifying blend so powerful, it revitalizes hair from the first wash and gives your client up to 10 weeks of color vibrancy**.

2. Reduce Rinsing Steps on Wash Day

The more your client washes their hair, the quicker their balayage will fade. It's a simple truth that applies to all hair color services, from highlights to gray coverage. But by reducing hair's exposure to water with leave-in treatments, clients can enjoy their dream shade for longer. Enter ULTIMATE COLOR Miracle Leave-In Mask, which cuts out another rinsing step. Applied after shampooing, to towel-dried hair, it gives your client up to 4x more resistance to breakage***, while moisturizing lightened lengths and helping color glow.

3. Protect Hair From Heat and UV Damage

Even the most flawless balayage color correction can fade in the face of heat and UV rays, so remind your client how important it is to protect their hair from day to day. ULTIMATE COLOR Miracle Leave-In Mask has a built-in sun shield, so that's UV exposure covered. Then, if they like to style their balayage with heat, ULTIMATE REPAIR Protective Leave-In will ward off the effects of scorching temperatures. The multi-tasking cream-serum also protects against breakage, frizz and mechanical damage, so their balayage will look healthier and more lustrous than ever before.
