A Disastrous DIY Before Her Wedding Day

A Disastrous DIY Before Her Wedding Day

After seeing this photo on social media, we contacted Ciara Reeves to learn more about her process, because we could not stop looking at this before photo! Ciara has been a hairstylist for 9 years, so she has seen a few things, but nothing like this! This (new) client tried to bleach her own hair TWICE and then, a week before her wedding, sat in Ciara’s chair and requested to be platinum and to keep her length. No big deal, right?
It was difficult to explain to her that it’s just not possible to bring her to a platinum blonde while keeping her length without compromising the integrity of the hair. The most difficult part was explaining the ‘why’ and going through the stages of lightening. She has always been fashion colors like red, blue, and purple but she wanted a more natural hair color for her wedding photos. I let her know we could do a darker blonde with brunette lowlights to break up the bands in the hair and then tone the existing blonde to a more ashy/beige tone.

Was she happy with the compromise of a dark blonde instead?

She was amazed by the outcome. She was disappointed that we couldn’t lift her hair anymore, but she was very happy with the end result. She finally understood that it will take multiple sessions down the platinum road before we get to a true “platinum”.

How long did this service take you?

This service took me 5 hours from beginning the sectioning to the blowdrying style.
I learned to trust the process of toners, even if it looks scary while processing. I also learned that it’s better to under-promise and over-deliver. I’m not a magician, but I will do what it takes to get someone looking awesome for their walk down the aisle! Compromise is a big thing to discuss and fully understand when doing color correcting. 9 out of 10 times there will be some sort of compromising with the end result since color corrections do not always go as planned! As a stylist, you have to be able to wing it and find solutions for unexpected outcomes.
Congratulations, Ciara Reeves! We think that you did an incredible transformation just before someone’s special day.

FORMULA / PROCESS:

  • Correction Step 1: Color Touch 2/0 under the occipital with a heavy saturation
  • Correction Step 2: From occipital to top of the head – a chunky weave in 1/2 inch sections, backcombing, and lightening the dark spots using Blondor Multiblonde Powder + 20vol. This was done to even out the existing blonde.
  • Correction Step 3: Everything left out of the chunky weave in this top section was saturated with Color Touch 5/71
  • Toner –  Equal parts Color Touch 7/97 and 9/16, processed for 20 minutes
  • Root smudge – Color Touch 5/71 while the toner processed
