Do Zig-Zag Partings Really Make Foiling Faster?

Victoria Thurman Hall demonstrates the internet-famous zig-zag parting with wide sections and puts it to the test. At the end, she will give it the stamp of APPROVED or she will call it BUSTED. Let’s see if this technique is worthy of your time in the salon!

STEP ONE: Using a rat tail comb, take a wide parting, and create a zig-zag section.

STEP TWO: Lift the section up and backcomb underneath, tease with 2-3 strong pushes down to the scalp. Then bring the section downward and push up the hair in the section up toward the scalp two more times.

STEP THREE: Grab a board! Because you will be lightening really thick and wide sections, Victoria already recommends that you use a board under your foil to help with the lightener application.

STEP FOUR: Apply lightener to the foil. By laying applying lightener to the foil first, it will help secure the large section by providing grip.

STEP FIVE: The technique then calls for the tail comb to be placed below the tease and above the foil to lock it into place. Then place the section onto the foil and lightener and hold down with your thumb.

STEP SIX: Paint lightener at the zig-zag parting and fully saturate the rest of the hair.
