The Art of Dry Cutting
The LOB haircut always resurfaces in the spring and early summer, making it the perfect haircut for removing weight and creating a refreshing new start! Nick Conn is a Sassoon trained hairstylist in Canada and he works full-time for Coty Professional, we are so happy he shared this dry cutting technique on an Instagram Live recently. If you do not have time to watch, we’ve summarized his step-by-step process below. Pro Tip: Prepare the hair! Nick’s favorite products for preparing for dry haircuts are Sebastian Dark Oil and Trilliant. Starting in the center back at low elevation and using a traveling guide, Nick uses a back cutting technique… he HIGHLY suggests practicing back cutting on a mannequin first! Fun fact, his mom was a hairdresser and he learned back cutting from his mom!
When moving toward the front, you will start to slightly over-direct back to create length in the front.
At the top, you will start to slightly elevate the hair more than 90 degrees to create soft layers.
For the fringe, you will over-direct, using the comb, and take it to the opposite side near the opposite jawline and point cut the fringe to create texture. Don’t forget to smooth along the way with your flat iron!
To carve softness into your fringe and connect the sides, Nick suggests using a razor with a feather blade to slide down the fringe and into the front perimeter.
To finish, Nick used a technique called spin cutting. This is designed to put some shorter pieces into the hair, a great technique for clients with a flatter crown. This is for someone who needs texture and has silk-like hair! *Never use this on a client with a drier porosity.
To style and add texture, Nick used Sebasstian’s Dry Clean Only (dry shampoo) to finish and we think it’s the perfect summer LOB! Well done, Nick.
