Client Communication, Be Prepared

Client Communication, Be Prepared

*Mannequin by @brianacisneros
While salons are reopening in states across the nation, they will operate much differently than before as each state is likely introducing new rules for operating. For example, salons may need to reduce capacity, require face masks for both stylists and clients, and hold back from offering certain services for the time being. Below are some communication tips to help keep the transparency between your clients, salon, and staff.

VIRTUAL CONSULTATION

  • Schedule time with your clients virtually via FaceTime, Zoom, IG Video prior to making appointments.
  • Discuss expectations, realistic budget, short and long-term hair goals.
  • Ask to see their hair in natural light and in their bathroom light. This is a good gauge to see how they view themselves.
This will also help you formulate a “hair recovery” plan.
Formulate an agreement or plan of action. This includes the above-mentioned goals and reality of their hair. For example: “Since you’ve colored your hair at home, now there is a band of color. I will be able to diffuse the band by adding highlights. However, your hair is going to need special care, that’s why I recommend you visit me again in ___  weeks and continue to use ___  care.”

SALON CLEANLINESS

“Dear Valued Client, We have taken extra precautions to maintain the utmost care to protect you and our team. This is why we are asking you to ensure you wear a mask while visiting the salon. We are creating a safe salon environment, all tools, stations, shampoo bowls, and salon surfaces are disinfected regularly between client visits. We adhere to all state board regulations, which is why we are maintaining a safe distance between each stylist station. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns prior to your arrival. We will do everything within our ability to ensure your visit is a safe and relaxing experience.”

WELLA PROFESSIONALS ARTIST’S TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SALON RETURN

@SonyaDove “Have a lot of compassion for your clients in the salon as you knew them well before but now is completely different. I am adding 15 minutes extra to my consultations.”
@hair_by_obert “At home haircuts gone wrong? Consultation and understanding are key! Be honest with what’s realistic. Use your razor or texturizing shears to connect and blend the bangs for a nicer grow out. Talk them through what you’re doing and why.”
@lootypics “Book extra time based on the consultation and if you were not able to have a virtual consultation the definitely BOOK MORE TIME for your client’s appointment.”

SALON ENVIRONMENT

Create a sanitized and germ-free environment by wearing protective gear and having hand sanitizer readily available. You will have to create physical space in the salon between stations and you will probably only be able to double book clients and you are comfortable with space.
@StevieAnneSmith “We listen to soothing music, no talking during shampoos, fresh flowers throughout the salon, added a bench out front for a fresh air waiting area and aromatherapy to try and provide a relaxing environment.”
@mintportmoody “At Mint we have express color night. It’s a set event where we only offer root colors. No blow-drying and no cutting. We color, shampoo, and towel dry. I have a lower price point for the event to keep it streamlined. We have to be honest with our clients about budget.”

STAY MOTIVATED

Remember why you got into being a hairdresser!
  • Create space for creativity
  • Maintain a business mindset
  • Try to use your time constructively
  • Do some deep honest reflecting.
“Only consume what nourishes your soul and creativity. If you feel down practice gratitude and do something for someone else. Be Kind to yourself and be patient, the lessons and growth may be found through hardships and failures.” ~ @brianacisneros
