Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. At its heart, Juneteenth is a day of celebration of the journey and freedom of Black people in the United States. The holiday originated on June 19, 1865 when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
