Hairdressers Against Human Trafficking
Human trafficking often crosses paths within the salon industry. In the last two years, Wella Store has helped bring awareness to salons by providing education to your businesses. Last year, we sent thousands of educational flyers and mirror clings to salons in order to bring attention to this crime in the U.S. This year, we are offering beauty professionals free access (use checkout code: WELLA) to a new 30-minute salon certification course created by Milady Education and Polaris Project. *Polaris is the non-profit that operates the National Human Trafficking Hotline. “As hairdressers, we have the unique opportunity to put an end to modern-day slavery.”-Haley Garber, hair stylist and advocate to end Human Trafficking.
Victims and Survivors Contacting Polaris for Help Has Grown Steadily
The Trafficking Hotline saw a nearly 20% increase in 2019 with the number of victims and survivors who contacted the hotline directly about their own situations. While this is alarming, it is also encouraging because bringing awareness through businesses to provide a helpline for victims is working! Hearing directly from the person affected gives the best information and avenue for Polaris to provide meaningful help, whether that be finding a safe place to stay the night, an attorney, a trauma counselor, transportation, or seeking law enforcement intervention.
LOCATIONS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING SITUATIONS IN 2019
Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. In some cases, traffickers trick, or physically force, victims into selling sex. In others, victims are threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane or illegal conditions.
