A Little Bit About Hair Loss

Hair Loss Awareness Month is an ever-growing movement observed every August. Established by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2001, the general aim brings to light a reality that tens of millions of American are familiar with – hair loss happens, and it happens to a lot of us. Until very recently, though, it was not often discussed. Whether it be embarrassment, or not knowing who to turn to, it was a topic people avoided. This month NIOXIN aims to normalize this conversation and more important, provide support and solutions.
Hair loss can be defined as any thinning of the hair on the scalp. When we think thinning, we typically think about it being in the crown or at the hairline. Thinning can actually happen anywhere on the scalp, either in small areas, or even throughout the entire scalp itself.
An exact cause for hair loss is hard to identify, but we know six major scenarios that tend to correlate to thinning and loss.
  1. Genetics – Many people are genetically predisposed to experiencing hair loss. The most important thing to realize here is that it’s not shameful, and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. This is one of the more difficult scenarios as there aren’t many solutions for genetic hair loss. Throughout the rest this article, we’ll explore how to give your hair every fighting chance it has.
  2. Diet – Yes, diet can greatly affect your hair, particularly when restricting caloric intake. A well-balanced approach to hair loss is important, and that include a well-balanced diet. Having a supplement like Recharging Complex can help take some of the pressure off. They’re a great multivitamin that focuses on supporting the skin. We know that great hair grows from healthy skin.
  3. Medication – It can have a big effect on hair growth, anywhere from losing hair to growing hair in unexpected places. If this is a concern, talk to your doctor.
  4. Environment – This one is personal to me, having grown up in a place like Michigan where we had varied seasons and extreme differences in humidity. Despite all that, the air was clean, so I was really only having to balance the difference in climate throughout the seasons. When I moved to Los Angeles I had to battle something new I wasn’t used to – poor air quality. It’s no secret that we have heavy air pollution in LA, but I’m not sure so many people realize what that that can mean for our skin (the body’s largest organ and the foundation for healthy growing hair). It can exacerbate the already very dry climate. For this, Scalp Relief was a savior. A gentle formula, without sulfates, parabens, and dyes, it’s still an effective cleanser and extremely moisturizing conditioner.
  5. Health – Our hair, skin, and nails are amazing indicators of our overall health. If you notice sudden changes within any three of these things, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor to check in and make sure all is okay.
  6. Stress – This might be the one near the top of most of our minds these days. Our world has gone through several major shifts in the last few years and it’s been a lot for us to handle. It’s important to ensure we’re consistently checking in with ourselves and trying to manage our stressors. Self-care is important and we totally have you covered. A NIOXIN fan favorite is enjoying a relaxing bath while doing a Deep Protect Density Mask treatment.
We know that hair loss and thinning can be a harrowing experience. Our mission at NIOXIN is not only to destigmatize this conversation, but also elevate it with education and providing personalized solutions.
Throughout the rest of August we’ll be a resource for all things hair loss, hair thinning, and scalp health related and we’re happy to share our over 30 years of understanding and research with you.
