Curl Confidence: Professional Color and Haircare Tips

Curly hair is as diverse as it is beautiful, ranging from loose waves to tight coils, each requiring custom care and attention. When it comes to professional salon color, it is essential to consider not only the desired end result, but also the potential impact on texture and curl pattern. Follow along as we explore professional color and haircare tips to achieve stunning results and maintain healthy curls.

COLORING CURLS

PRE-TREATMENT + POST TREATMENT
Pre-treating and cleansing the hair is an essential step when preparing the hair canvas for color. Remove product buildup, balance pH levels, improve color adhesion, enhance porosity and extend color longevity. Over time, hair may accumulate unnecessary oils, conditioners, minerals and styling products, creating a barrier that prevents color from penetrating the hair shaft effectively. Schedule time for a pre-treatment service at the salon prior to color application. We recommend Wella Professionals INVIGO Aqua Pure Purifying Shampoo to reveal the hairs natural shine and gently remove any buildup. Apply, lather, and cleanse all areas of the head form, focusing on the hairline for any additional buildup from makeup, perspiration or mineral products. Rinse and follow with Sebastian Professional Penetraitt Conditioner to restore moisture, balance porosity and transform the hair from dry and dull, to soft and bouncy. Dry the hair and proceed with color application. Limited time at the salon? No stress! Retail the recommended shampoo and conditioner to your curl friends. Instruct salon guests to cleanse, clarify and dry, prior to their arrival at the salon.
POROSITY + FORMULATION
Understanding porosity of curly hair is crucial when selecting the right color formula. Porosity affects how color penetrates the hair, with high porosity hair absorbing color quickly, but releasing quickly in return. It is essential to formulate correctly from roots to tip and choose techniques that cater to the unique porosity of every salon guest. Analyze the hair strand and formulate accordingly.
LIGHTENING
Hair health and curl formation are key factors when formulating for curly hair. When it comes to fine, textured hair, remember three words... "low and slow". When formulating for lightening techniques and salon color, one of our favorite products is Wella Professionals BlondorPlex Multi Blonde Lightener. Wella Professionals’ revolutionary BlondorPlex formula features Bond Builder Technology that provides up to 9 levels of lift and up to 97% less breakage. BlondorPlex is recommended for on and off scalp lightening, formulated with anti-yellow molecules to help reduce unwanted undertones throughout the lightening service. Remember... "the power is in the powder". With up to 9 levels of lift, Wella Professionals BlondorPlex has the capability to lift. When formulated with Welloxon Perfect Creme Developer 3% (10 volume) or Welloxon Perfect Pastel Developer 1.9% (6%), the lift will be slower, but the curls and integrity of the hair will remain intact.
CONDITIONING GLOSS
Add condition and shine to curly hair with an in-salon conditioning gloss. Wella Professionals Shinefinity is a demi-permanent color glaze, delivering shine you can feel.  A clean, vegan formula with balanced pH technology and a no drip, gel-cream consistency.  Zero lift, zero silicones, zero damage, zero alcohol, zero ammonia, zero direct dyes and zero parabens. Thanks to a unique formulation, Shinefinity delivers a healthy-looking, never artificial, shiny result, conditioning while it works. #PROTIP: Add a little gold to your Shinefinity formula and increase the shine reflect even more. A few of our favorite shades are: Wella Professionals Shinefinity Zero Lift Glaze: 09/73 Very Light Blonde Brown Gold (Caramel Milk), 08/38 Light Blonde Gold Pearl (Honey Latte), 06/73 Dark Blonde Brown Gold (Caramel Chocolate), 05/37 Light Brown Gold Brown (Caramel Espresso) and

CURL CARE

PRE-CONDITION
Apply conditioner to curls prior to your shampoo service – a popular technique for combination curls looking for an extra boost of moisture. It delivers hydration to mid-lengths and ends while ensuring the scalp still gets a good cleanse. Try Wella Professionals Fusion Intense Repair Conditioner or Sebastian Professional Dark Oil Lightweight Conditioner.
CLEANSING CONDITIONER
Co-washing with a cleansing conditioner can help to reduces frizz, enhance curl definition and keep waves hydrated. All you need is a cleansing conditioner, like Wella Professionals NutriCurls Cleansing Conditioner for Waves & Curls. A low foaming cleansing conditioner that helps define and bring curls back to life. The NutriCurls Care collection provides waves and curls with the right level of nourishment for beautiful, bouncy locks. Formulated without silicones and ideal for alternating with a deeper cleanse, either by pre-conditioning the hair or opting for a daily shampoo and treatment.

DETANGLING
#PROTIP Use a wide-tooth comb when detangling curly hair. Separate curls, prevent breakage and direct curls into shape with one sweeping motion. Start combing downwards, starting at the ends, gradually moving toward the base of the hair strand. Try it with a Wella Professionals wide-toothed comb, to gently glide through the hair and detangle with ease.
